Keeping the 1968 Colts off this countdown because they lost Super Bowl III to Joe Namath's Jets would be like keeping the 2007 Patriots off for what happened in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl against the Giants.Īctually, it would be worse. You'll meet him and his namesake team a little later in the countdown. While the Eagles were flying bombing missions and storming beaches, a brilliant young coach was keeping morale high by assembling football teams at stateside military bases. The only force that could stop these battle-hardened Eagles was another team with its own military ties. The 1949 team topped the league in points and points allowed, winning a series of 38-7 and 42-0 blowouts before blanking the flashy Los Angeles Rams, 14-0, in the NFL Championship Game, the Eagles' second straight shutout in a title game. With the help of speedy young running back Steve Van Buren, Neale's Eagles stormed the NFL in 19. Fullback-linebacker-punter Joe Muha was an artillery lieutenant at Iwo Jima.Ĭoach Greasy Neale gave his combat veterans a wide berth when it came to discipline he figured General Patton covered that part of their training. Center-linebacker Chuck Bednarik flew 30 bombing missions over Germany as a waist-gunner in a B-24. End Pete Pihos won both the Bronze Star and Silver Star as an infantry lieutenant. Quarterback Tommy Thompson earned a Purple Heart on the beach at Normandy. But the Eagles, just a few years removed from merging with the Steelers for a season due to wartime manpower shortages, had a roster loaded with men just back from the European and Asian theaters. The NFL was full of World War II veterans in the late 1940s, of course. Having helped win World War II, the 1949 Eagles had little trouble winning the National Football League. You know the storyline as well: outstanding in the regular season, foiled by the Patriots or otherwise snakebit in the playoffs.īut this was the year the Colts finally broke through, beat the Patriots in a memorable AFC Championship Game, beat the Bears in a rainy Super Bowl and redeemed all of the Colts teams of previous years that looked so much better in the regular season than this one yet lost in the playoffs like it was their cosmic destiny. The style of play is also familiar: Manning and Harrison running the route tree before dawn on Sunday morning, Manning barking audibles at the line, Dungy's Tampa-2 defense holding opponents at bay when they tried to catch up. The names and personalities are familiar to you: Manning, Tony Dungy, Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis. ![]() It's a group of teams that kept finishing a victory or two short of reaching our top 10. They're boosted onto the list by a decade of Manning teams that won 12-14 games but lost in the playoffs. The 2005 Colts finished second in the NFL in points allowed, the 2007 Colts first, while the 2006 Colts finished 23rd.įrankly, the 2006 Colts would not have made this countdown at all if teams did not get a bonus for their long-term excellence. The 20 teams won more games and posted much better defensive stats. They just happened to be the one that won a Super Bowl. The 2006 Colts probably weren't the best Peyton Manning Colts team of the mid-2000s. You can quibble with some of the selections and the order, but you can't argue with this countdown's sheer volume of football excellence. But no matter how much time you spend encyclopedia crawling and stat crunching (including Football Outsiders' historical DVOA estimates), comparing great teams across decades and eras is an inexact science. And multi-season dynasties get a boost in the rankings over teams that rose and fell quickly. There are still multiple great Tom Brady Patriots teams and Steel Curtain Steelers on the list, despite the "shadow" effect. To prevent this from becoming just a countdown of 1960s Packers, 1970s Steelers and recent Patriots, each team chosen casts a five-year "shadow." So the 2004 Patriots also represent the 2003 Patriots, the 1998 Broncos represent the 1997 team, and so on. There is one ground rule to keep in mind. You are about to meet an amazing collection of Super Bowl champions, undefeated teams, teams that led the league in offense and/or defense, teams that captured imaginations and defined generations. Me, I like to save bars of platinum for a while and then use it to build disgustingly high-value roads - but it's worth holding on to unused just in case you get nobles who like platinum and demand platinum stuff be made.ĭogs - they're only assignable once they're trained, as either war dogs or hunting dogs. Cut down a tree, build a wood burner's workshop, burn one tree, dismantle the woodburner's workshop 'cause you won't be using it again. Oh, and C) increase the value of the room, which also makes dwarves happy.Ĭoke - yep, you need one unit of refined coal to fuel the smelters while you refine the first batch of coke (unless you have a magma smelter). But they're nice to have, in that they A) can be locked, thus keeping dwarves inside if you need them there, and B) make dwarves happy. Set up a new stockpile that's set up to accept only the types of stone you actually want to work with.ĭoors - not really, no. Stones in stockpiles - well, you can always remove the stockpile. This does assume the water dump actually leads somewhere of course. The water will flow through the basin and into the water dump. ![]() If the basin isnt full and the water always has somewhere to flow, everything will be fine. Really, the root cause is 'too much stuff to do, not enough dwarves to do it.' This is the root cause of at least 80% of all 'problems' in DF get used to it. It depends how quickly the water can leave the basin to the water dump. ![]() But your dwarves might very well have a massive backload of other jobs to do, and so they might well go and say 'eh, I'll get to it later' and then never get around to it before the crops wither and die. Now, when the crops ripen, they generate jobs ('harvest crops'). Withered plump helmets - 'Plant Gathering' is a type of labor (or is it Crop Harvesting or something like that? Something). You can leave it in any stockpile that uses barrels or (I think) bins, since dwarfs can but those in squares with stone in them, unlike chunks of ore or pieces of wood. (Or you can just have your masons build a series of concentric walls with trapped gates around your fort, Minas Tirith-style, and they'll use it up eventually.) Really, stone is only junk when it's in a stockpile with things that don't stack with it. To get stone out of stockpiles you can tag it "dump" using whichever menu 'k' brings up, then they'll carry it to a zone you've designated as a garbage dump zone. (d -> b -> d -> enter -> enter) on each of your Caged Enemies. Till then, they're pets and not working animals and won't do anything useful. Create a 1x1 Garbage Dump Zone near your Animal Stockpile, and make sure its the only Garbage Dump Zone in your Fortress. I'm pretty sure you can only assign dogs to dwarfs after you train them using a kennel. So if the food stockpile is far from the field, and the wood stockpile is nearby the pile of cut wood, they'll carry wood all day while the crops rot. IIRC, Dwarfs are lazy lazy buggers, and will preferentially do easy jobs over "important" jobs (since they're too dumb, AI-wise, to decide what's important). ![]() The Trax's drivetrain provides a subpar combination of fuel efficiency and acceleration that is worse than its rivals. There's not much variation among the Trax's competitive set in terms of fuel economy, both by the EPA's standards and in our real-world testing. Traxadaisical: 2017 Chevrolet Trax First Drive.2017 Chevrolet Trax Tested: Small Stands Tall. The Trax's brakes are among the strongest in its class, and the pedal feels firm and confidence-inspiring. There's less leaning in corners than you'd expect given the Trax's tall stature, although the handling isn't as responsive and eager as in competitors such as the Mazda CX-30 and the Kia Soul. A firm ride and steady handling give the Trax a feeling of solidity, and quick steering makes it agile in parking lots and urban areas. A front-wheel-drive Trax required a languid 9.3 seconds to reach 60 mph in our acceleration testing. The six-speed automatic is smooth enough, but often executes sluggish shifts and is sometimes reluctant to downshift. However, as soon as you need to pass or merge on the highway, the engine runs out of steam, providing more noise than actual acceleration when you step on it. Around town, the engine's turbocharger provides a decent amount of low-end punch. The turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder makes 138 horsepower-a low number for this segment-and it's buzzy and unrefined. Only one engine is offered in the Trax, and it's not a great one. For an additional $450, treat yourself to the aforementioned Convenience package. Those niceties include staples such as cruise control, rear-window tint, heated exterior mirrors, and remote start. Unless you're really budget focused, we'd recommend splurging on the LT as it adds several must-have features that honestly should be standard. Never fear, Chevy still provides several options and packages to deck out your Trax, such as the Premium Seat package, which adds faux-leather upholstery with heated front seats, and the Convenience package, which includes keyless passive entry, push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat. The previously available Sun and Sound package, the optional power sunroof, available Bose stereo system, and two-tone Jet Black and Brandy interior theme have also been deleted. The Trax loses its top-spec Premier trim for 2021, leaving the LS and LT models as the last remaining offerings. The Trax shares its platform with the similarly priced Buick Encore and has to compete with the slightly larger and more modern Chevy Trailblazer in its own showroom. The only engine offered is a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder with lackluster performance that can be paired with either front- or all-wheel drive. Still, it offers touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, so it's not entirely analog. The driver's seat is situated at an appropriately high position, and the rest of the Trax's cabin is reasonably spacious and comfortable for a small SUV, but it lacks standard features and amenities that make its rivals more appealing. Propping up the small end of the Chevrolet lineup is the 2021 Trax, which offers SUV basics and not much else. But it takes on a mounting sense of threat with each use, as the catastrophic potential of the physicist’s work becomes clear.Sound is the sensation produced through the organs of hearing or the physical cause of this sensation. It’s taken from a moment of triumph and glory, the high point of Oppenheimer’s career. And there’s a recurring motif in the soundscape, a crescendo of thunderously stamping feet. Ludwig Göransson’s score is masterful and mercurial, surely one of the finest of the year. ![]() Like Jonathan Glazer’s upcoming The Zone of Interest, this is a film in which the horrors of war are not shown but conveyed inescapably through what we hear. Most effective, however, is the use of sound and music. Oppenheimer’s world is literally rocked by the shockwaves of the reaction that has been set in motion. Equally inventive is the way the sets seem to quake at moments of tension. But more interesting are the abstract moments it’s as though we are venturing into the heart of the atom itself. There’s no shortage of scenes of furious blackboard scribbling, the accepted cinematic signifier of scientific genius. Not surprisingly, given Nolan’s preference for shooting on Imax 70mm film, the picture has a depth of detail you could drown in. She does, however, claim a couple of terrific moments later on: a skin-flaying interrogation scene a wordless glare that conveys the full nuclear winter of her animosity towards a disloyal colleague.īut, for the most part, the film is a towering achievement. And Emily Blunt, as J Robert’s wife Kitty Oppenheimer, spends much of the first two hours mutinously clutching a martini on the edge of the frame. Florence Pugh, as Oppenheimer’s mistress Jean Tatlock, gets short shrift. There are other problems: the cursory treatment of the female characters is one. ‘A clenched fist looking for something to punch’: Matt Damon, left, as Lt Gen Leslie Groves, with Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer. Nolan’s films frequently require a couple of viewings to unravel fully, and while it lacks the baffle-factor of Tenet, Oppenheimer is no exception. Time in Oppenheimer doesn’t feel entirely linear – there are moments, in particular a pivotal encounter with Albert Einstein, that seem unmoored from the rest of the film. Insights into his stellar early academic career are punctuated by glimpses of a later humiliating security clearance hearing that picked over every aspect of his life the development of the bomb – the so-called Manhattan Project – is cut together with another hearing, this time in the Senate, to establish whether Oppenheimer’s former colleague Lewis Strauss ( Robert Downey Jr, excellent) should be appointed in a federal government role. The version of Oppenheimer that we see on screen at any given time is a marker, an indication of which timeline we are currently inhabiting. Given Nolan’s preference for shooting on Imax 70mm film, the picture has a depth of detail you could drown in At other times he’s calm and glassily composed, somehow removed from jostling egos and the fusion of ideas that will take shape into the ultimate weapon. In one shot we see Oppenheimer hauling an armful of books into a new classroom, and it looks as though he’s buckling under the weight of his accumulated knowledge. He seems impossibly slight, a theoretical idea of a man in contrast to the robust certainties of the military figures he works alongside ( Matt Damon’s Lt Gen Leslie Groves, for example, is bullish and solid, a clenched fist looking for something to punch). In fact, Murphy’s physicality as a whole is one of the most potent weapons at the film’s disposal. Murphy’s far-seeing ice-chip eyes have never been put to better use. It’s a realisation that plays out, inexorably, in Oppenheimer’s hollow, haunted face as the film unfolds. Ultimately, however, the monster in this story is not Oppenheimer’s invention but the appetite for annihilation that it unleashes in mankind. Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer is an atomic-age Frankenstein, a man captivated by the boundless possibilities of science, realising too late that his creation has a limitless capacity for destruction. But perhaps more than all of this, Oppenheimer is the ultimate monster movie. It weaves together courtroom drama, romantic liaisons, laboratory epiphanies and lecture hall personality cults. Oppenheimer is a dense and intricate period piece, playing out in a tangle of timelines. But “biopic” seems too small a word to contain the ambition and scope of Christopher Nolan’s formidable if occasionally unwieldy latest. It’s billed as a biopic of theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, dubbed the “father of the atomic bomb”. ![]() The word sumac traces its etymology from Old French sumac (13th century), from Mediaeval Latin sumach, from Arabic summāq ( سماق), from Syriac summāqa ( ܣܘܡܩܐ)- meaning "red".
